Terry M. Smith
Terry Smith, one of the nations’ most high-profile high school coaches, joined the Temple University football staff as the wide receivers coach in January of 2013.

He joined the Owls after 11 seasons as the head coach at Monroeville’s Gateway High School.

Under Smith’s guidance, the Gators went 101-30 overall with 11 W.P.I.A.L. playoff appearances, seven conference championships, four AAAA title games, and numerous Top 25 national rankings, while turning out more than 70 students on Division I college scholarships.

Under Smith’s watch, Gateway matriculated Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebacker Mortty Ivy and defensive back Justin King, his son. As a running back, King became one of the first WPIAL running backs to collect 4,000 career yards in AAAA.

In 2010, Smith was named one of the 50 Men of Excellence by The New Pittsburgh Courier for his accomplishment, sacrifice, and service in the community.

Smith is a 1987 graduate of Gateway High School and a member of the 1985 and 1986 Gators’ W.P.I.A.L. AAAA championship football teams.  He was elected to the Gateway Sports Hall of Fame.

A 1991 graduate of Penn State, Smith received his degree in business management. He was a four-year letterwinner at wide receiver with the Nittany Lions under Joe Paterno. Smith finished his collegiate career with 108 receptions for 1,825 yards and 15 touchdowns which ranks sixth on the Lions’ career chart for receptions and seventh for receiving yards.

Smith was an 11th-round draft pick by the Washington Redskins in 1992.

Smith is married to the former Alison Fulton. They have two children—son Justin King (26), a defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and daughter Haley (14).
