PHILADELPHIA - Senior Nyika White of the Temple University men’s gymnastics team has been named the Owlsports.com Athlete of the Month for March. White, a two-time All-America performer, currently boasts the number one overall ranking nationally on the rings with a 9.775 average. He will lead a contingent of seven Owl gymnasts at the NCAA Qualifying Round to be held at West Point, NY on April 7th. Temple is ranked 13th in the nation.
White posted a 9.8 on the rings to win the event at the ECAC-EIGL Championships held the weekend of March 25-26. In the preliminary round (3/25), he posted a career-high 9.9 on the apparatus. It was his second ECAC-EIGL rings title after taking the crown as a sophomore in 2003. The Owl captain also placed fifth on vault at the 2005 ECAC-EIGL Championships and will compete on that apparatus as well at the NCAA Qualifying Round.
In his first meet after returning from a bicep injury, White earned a tie for first with a 9.600 score in a dual meet against Navy on March 19. The Williamston, NC native earned his previous All-America honors by placing third on the rings at the NCAA Championships in 2003 and second in 2004.
