Philadelphia - Temple University's golfer Paul Amess and rower Robert Protesto have been named Academic-All Star Player's of the Year for their respective sports by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association.
Amess, Temple's top male golfer, finished 14th in the Atlantic 10 Conference golf championships and led the Owls with a 73.9 stroke average. On top of being named the area's Player of the Year, the senior was named Temple's male student-athlete of the year. Amess has received an exemption to the final round of qualifying for the British Open after being victorious in the Bermuda Match Play Championship. The Inquirer named him to the Academic-All Area Team in 2007 as well.
Protesto, a Newtown Square, Pa. native, sat in the seventh seat for the Owls varsity-eight and guided the men's rowing team to victories in the Murphy and Knecht Cups. Protesto's team placed third in the Dad Vail Regatta and the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. A mathematics major with a 3.73 grade point average, Protesto is a three-time Inquirer Academic All-Area selection and was named to the Temple University Director's Honor Roll.
Berkely Summerlin (women's lacrosse), Bill Gennaro (men's rowing), Thomas Masterson (men's rowing), Don Powers (men's rowing), Bailey Chick (women's rowing), Anne Mikolajewski (women's rowing), Jacqueline Swan (women's rowing) and Anastasia Rukavyshnykova (women's tennis) joined Amess and Protesto on the Academic All-Area Teams for their respective sports.
