Men's Soccer Falls To Saint Louis On Early Goal
11.6.09 | Men's Soccer
Shorthanded TU squad unable to generate offense
Ambler, PA - The Temple men's soccer (8-7-2, 3-4-1) hosted Saint Louis (11-6-0, 6-2-0) on a crisp Friday afternoon at the Ambler Sports Complex in a crucial conference match-up with playoff implications. A Billiken goal four minutes into the game led Saint Louis over the Owl's 1-0.
Saint Louis capitalized on slow start by the Owls when midfielder Jacob Brown headed a corner kick from midfielder Alex Sweetin into the right corner of the net, passed a diving Bret Mollon at 4:29 into the contest. The Billikens continued to apply early pressure, forcing Mollon to make an outstanding close range save on a header to keep the game locked at 1-0.
Toward the end of the first half the Cherry and White showed signs of life when forward Tyler Witmer launched a 25-yard shot that knuckled just over the crossbar. Saint Louis held a 1-0 advantage at the end of the first half.
The second half was a hard fought evenly played match. TU senior defender Martin Dell'Arciprete led the attack midway through the half as he got forward and launched a shot from the corner of the 18-yard mark that deflected off Billiken goalkeeper Ross Kaufman, giving the Owls a corner.
With just over five minutes remaining in the game the Owls had one last chance when Witmer drove a free kick from 40 yards out into the box, but the ball found the hands of Kaufman.
The game ended in a 1-0 defeat for a shorthanded TU squad. Forced to sit out today's contest was senior midfielder J.T. Noone. Saint Louis out-shot Temple 19-9 in the game. TU goalie Mollon had nine saves.
The Cherry and White finish the regular season at home on Sunday, November 8th at 1:00 p.m. when they host 15th-ranked Charlotte and celebrate Senior Day.
