Conn tallies twice, helps lead Owls to a 4-1-1 overall record
Ambler, PA – Sophomore forward Niki Conn continued her recent scoring surge, netting her fifth and sixth goals of the season in the Temple women's soccer teams' (4-1-1) 4-3 win over the University at Albany, Sunday afternoon at the Ambler Sports Complex. Freshman Morgyn Seigfried tallied the game winner in the second overtime, her first collegiate tally.
The contest was scoreless until Conn opened up the scoring in the 52nd minute on a pass from sophomore Alicia Yurkovic.
Albany responded 10 minutes later when forward Chelsea DeVerna dribbled past the steadfast Owl defense and slipped the ball past goalie Gillian Kacsuta. The teams continued to trade goals, until Albany midfielder Rebecca Lee gave the Great Danes a 3-2 lead at 68:54 in the second half when she hit a 25-yard blast just over the reach of Kacsuta.
Two minutes later, Albany forward Ashley Tirabassi was sent off when she received her second yellow card of the contest at 70:51. It did not take long for the Owls to capitalize on the man advantage. Conn tallied her second goal of the game off of a free kick cross from Meridith Crowell, which Conn deflected and headed into the back of the net.
Regulation ended in a 3-3 tie after a second half that produced six goals between the two sides. The first overtime proved to be no difference maker, with the Owls recording the only shot in the period.
Six minutes into the second overtime period recently substituted freshman Morgyn Seigfried knocked the game-winner into the back of the net off of a corner kick from Stephanie Ferretti, who had a goal and an assist in the contest. TU forward Nicky Petrillo provided the assist on Ferretti's goal.
Conn tallied her fourth goal in two games which capped off a 2-0 home weekend for the Owls who needed a total team effort to win on Sunday afternoon.
“When you give up three goals and come back and score four, that's a sign of a good team,” commented head coach David Jones. “Obviously were not happy to give up that many goals, but if we can come back and keep fighting early, it gives us the confidence we can come back and do that later in the season.”
A total of six yellow cards were handed out in the physical contest. Temple out shot Albany 23-11, with Owls' freshman goalkeeper Gillian Kacsuta made five saves.
The Cherry and White go on a three-game road trip before returning home to host Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island on September 27th at 1:00pm.
