Men's Soccer Tops Penn In Double-Overtime; Owls Claim Share Of Soccer Six Title

Witmer fuels scoring with two-assist effort

Ambler, PA – It took nearly two full overtimes for the Temple men's soccer team (3-3-1) to defeat Penn 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex. A breakaway goal in the waning seconds of double-overtime by sophomore Evan Bransdorfer proved to be the difference maker, helping TU claim a share of the Soccer Six title for the Owls.

The Cherry and White opened the scoring early in the sixth minute, with sophomore Tyler Witmer crossing a ball that bounced around in the box before senior J.T. Noone found the back of the net, giving TU the lead with his first goal of the season.

Penn would answer in the 16th minute, when Tobi Olopade beat Owls keeper Bret Mollon one-on-one with a blast to the top right corner, tying the game. Mollon would go on to make three saves in the contest.

A sure opportunity for the Owls was lost, when a controversial no-call was made as junior Max Kinderwater was taken down in the box.

The contest would remain deadlocked 1-1 at the end of regulation, with Penn controlling much of the offense in the second half. The Quakers out-shot TU 17-7 on the match.

After an uneventful first overtime, it seemed that a tie may be inevitable, as the two teams could not mount any offensive pressure. With :55 seconds left Witmer headed a punt forward to Bransdorfer, who found himself one-on-one with Penn keeper Ben Berg, beating him with a blast to the post from the edge of the six.

The win gives the Owls a 2-0 record in Soccer Six competition, tying them with Drexel (2-0 SSP) for first in the league. It was TU's first victory over their cross-town rival since 1990.

Next up for the Owls will be a match with Hartford on Sept. 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Ambler Sports Complex.
