Temple’s Peanut Joseph Named MAC Defensive Player of the Week

Owls Travel to Eastern Michigan on Oct. 3

CLEVELAND– Temple junior LB Elijah “Peanut” Joseph (Hartford, Conn) has earned Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the East division, the MAC announced on Monday.

In Temple's 37-13 win over Buffalo, Joseph's 95-yard interception return for a touchdown was the first interception and touchdown of his career. Leading 13-6 with seven seconds left in the first half, Joseph made the key play of the game as Buffalo was threatening to score, and Joseph made the interception to give the Owls a 20-6 lead. His 95-yard TD set the school record for longest interception return, rewriting Rich Lee's 92-yard record from 1971 against Delaware.

Additionally, Joseph had three solo tackles had against the Bulls. After three games, Joseph has 13 tackles, two TFL, an interception, and a sack.

Joseph also earned national Honorable Mention Performer of the Week accolades from the College Football Performance Award and OwlSports.com Athlete of the Week honors.

The MAC honor is the first of Joseph's collegiate career and the Owls' second this season.

Sophomore WR James Nixon (New Haven, Conn.) earned Honorable Mention Performer of the Week accolades at kickoff returner from the College Football Performance Award. Nixon's 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the win over Buffalo was the first KOR touchdown of his career. He finished with two KO returns for 106 yards. Nixon also graded 100 percent on the 12 special teams plays in which he participated.

After three games, Nixon has 152 yards on four KOR. He also has 152 yards and a touchdown on three receptions.

This week Temple (1-2, 1-0 MAC) travels to Eastern Michigan (0-3, 0-0 MAC) on Saturday, Oct. 3 for a 1 p.m. contest at Rynearson Stadium. WPHT Radio (1210 AM) will carry the game live.
