Conn nets team-best seventh goal of the season in second half
Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Temple women's soccer team (5-6-0, 0-1-0 A-10) opened conference play with a 2-1 loss at Atlantic 10 foe George Washington (7-3-0, 1-0-0 A-10) on Friday afternoon. Two first half goals from the Colonials' Alex Neal were enough to outlast a solid second half effort from the Owls, which included a tally from junior Niki Conn.
George Washington got on board in the 39th minute, as Neal tapped in a loose ball to break the scoreless tie. Neal then found the back of the net on a pass from Molly Bruh to put the score at 2-0.
Owls' keeper Tara Murphy (2-3-0) made four saves in a highly-defensive first half for TU. Senior Sara Scheid made her season debut starting on defense for the Owls, returning from a preseason injury.
Temple was outshot 7-3 in the first half, but turned it around in the second to outshoot GW 8-4. The Owls' defense buckled down and did not allow a single shot on net in the second.
Conn extended her team-lead in goals in the second half thanks to senior Kelly Diviny, netting her seventh goal of the season to cut the Owls' deficit in half. Conn ripped a shot past GW keeper Lindsey Rowe to the near corner in the 62nd minute. It was Diviny's team-best sixth assist of the year.
Despite several other tries, the Owls could not find the critical game-tying goal.
Conn also moves into fifth place all-time in Temple history with 46 career points, passing Rachel Bentz (1991-93).
The Owls wrap up their first A-10 weekend with a trip to Richmond on Sunday. Action is slated for 1:00 p.m.
