Calafiore Nets Two As Men's Soccer Slips Past Dayton, 2-1

Pair of second half goals improves Owls to 2-0 in A-10 play

DAYTON, Ohio - A pair of second half goals from sophomore Cody Calafiore led the Temple men's soccer team past Dayton, 2-1, Friday evening at Baujan Field. With the win, the Owls remain undefeated in Atlantic 10 play with a 2-0 record, posting a 4-5-2 overall record. Dayton falls to 4-5-3, 0-3-0 in A-10 play.
Both teams searched for rythym on offense in the first, with the Owls outshooting the Flyers 5-1. Owls' redshirt-senior keeper Bret Mollon left the game in the sixth minute, with redshirt-freshman Fran Nelms taking over for the remainder of the contest.
Calafiore struck with his first goal in the 65th minute, collecting a rebound in front and sending it home. Freshman Vaughn Spurrier was credited the assist.
Dayton answered to tie the game in the 67th, as Victor Duru capitalized on a mishandled ball from Nelms and sent a shot upper right to knot the game at 1-1.
The game would be won off a TU corner kick, as Calafiore sent a shot in from close on the left wing that slipped past UD keeper Tyler Picard.
Nelms (1-0-0) picked up his first career win, allowing one goal and making no saves. Picard (4-5-3) took the loss, posting five saves and letting up two goals.
With his performance tonight, Calafiore now leads the team in goals with four and breaks the double-digit point mark on the season with a team-best 10.
The Owls remain in Ohio for one more contest, traveling to compete at Xavier on Sunday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m.
