Calafiore nets in regulation to force extra play

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Sophomore Cody Calafiore continued his weekend scoring streak with a goal to force overtime in the Temple men's soccer team's (4-6-2, 2-1-0 A-10) match against Xavier (6-3-3, 3-1-0 A-10) on Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers would not be outdone at home, however, tallying in the second overtime period to win the contest, 2-1.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first, with Xavier holding a slight edge in shots, 8-7. Owls' keeper Bret Mollon (3-6-2, 1-1-0), returning to action after suffering an injury on Friday at Dayton, made two saves in the period.
XU's Justin Jarvis broke the scoreless tie in the 72nd minute, collecting a rebound and sending it home for a 1-0 lead.
Calafiore was called on to take a penalty shot in the 87th minute. The Owls' hottest scorer came up clutch and drilled a shot past XU keeper Justin Marshall (6-2-3, 3-1-0) to tie the game at 1-1.
The score would remain the same at the end of regulation. Each keeper was tested in the second half, with Mollon posting four saves to Marshall's three.
The first overtime would pass with no score, as neither team could manage a shot on net. Xavier netted early in the second extra stanza, with Matt Walker and Luke Spencer passing to find Brandon Bucher for the golden goal.
The Owls are now 4-6-2, 2-1-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Musketeers move to 6-3-3, 3-1-0 in the A-10.
Calafiore netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season, third of the weekend and fourth in the Owls' last three games. He now leads the team with 12 points (5g, 2a).
Temple returns home to Ambler next weekend as they take on Massachusetts and Rhode Island on October 22 and 24.
