Owls dominate offensive end in loss

AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple men's soccer team battled Massachusetts for 59 minutes on Friday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex before a defensive breakdown led to the deciding goal in the Minutemen's 1-0 victory. The Owls are now 4-7-2, 2-2-0 in Atlantic 10 play while Massachusetts moves to 4-3-6, 3-0-1.
First half play was dominated by the Owls, but did not see a ball find the back of the net. Temple held its foe to no shots, while manage five of its own.
In the middle of the second half, the Owls failed to clear the ball in their own end. Massachusetts gained control, and freshman forward Connor Devivo gathered a rebound and shot a ball from close range that deflected floated over Temple's keeper Bret Mollon.
Temple continued its offense pressure after being down 1-0 but could not find the net in the second half. In the 69th minute, sophomore midfielder Homero Rodriguez found junior forward Tyler Witmer on a cross, but the try fell short as Umass keeper Chris Peikos saved the header.
Minutes later, Piekos thwarted another attempt by the Owls, this time blocking a close range shot by sophomore midfielder Cody Calafiore. Piekos finished with five saves on the day.
The Owls outshot their opponent thirteen to five in the game. Keeper Bret Mollon made one save in the loss.
The Temple men's soccer team continues its weekend at home on Sunday, October 24 when they a face Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m.
