AMBLER, Pa. - The Temple men's soccer team rolled past Richmond (5-12-1, 4-5-0), 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex, solidifying a two-win weekend and a spot at the Atlantic 10 Tournament next weekend in Charlotte. The Owls (8-8-2, 6-3-0) have to wait for the results from the remainder of the A-10 matches this afternoon to find out their seeding.
"We're pretty excited about making the tournament again," MacWilliams said. "We still have some unfinished business so we're going to go out there and compete and hopefully win a few games."
Temple battled Richmond through a tough first half and came out with a 1-0 lead. Freshman Dalton Carroll's first collegiate goal came in a big way. Junior Tyler Witmer and sophomore Cody Calafiore combined to find Carroll, who from about 35 yards out, hit a shot that bounced past Richmonds' Brock Tomlinson for the eventual game-winner in the 41st minute.
"I think the first half was a tough half for us," said head coach David MacWilliams. "I think Richmond was a good team and I really was impressed with the way they moved the ball and created chances."
The Owls outshot Richmond 6-5 in the first half, but would turn on the offense in the second.
Calafiore was again the catalyst for the Owls' next goal, as he collected a pass from freshman Sam Speaker and found freshman Vaughn Spurrier just inside the box. Spurrier slipped by the defense and fired a shot left post to put TU up 2-0 in the 75th.
Less than five minutes later the Cherry and White struck again. Carroll controlled a ball and dribbled through midfield, dishing off to Witmer in the center who immediately passed right to Speaker. Speaker found himself one-on-one with UR's Tomlinson, keeping his composure and finding the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
"We talked about that second goal being a very important goal and who was going to score it either us or them," MacWilliams said. "Fortunately we scored it and credit goes to the guys, they worked extremely hard and I'm pretty proud of them."
Redshirt-senior keeper Bret Mollon made one save in his final game at Ambler Sports Complex, collecting his sixth shutout of the season. He, along with seniors Jared Harris and Max Kinderwater, were honored prior to the start of competition.
The Owls ended the regular season with an even 8-8-2 overall record. In A-10 play, Temple finishes 6-3-0. The Atlantic 10 Tournament is slated for November 11-14 at Charlotte.
