YPSILANTI, Mich. – Scoring 25 points at the free throw line, Eastern Michigan (7-5) handed the Temple women's basketball team a 65-56 loss and ended the Owls' five-game win streak on Tuesday night. Temple (7-5) got 16 points from Kristen McCarthy and a double-double of 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds from Shey Peddy.
Peddy needed just 12 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau in her career, and has now scored 1,002 points in less than three full seasons at Division I. She also tallied a game-high seven assists while McCarthy recorded a game-high five steals.
Tavelyn James led Eastern Michigan with 17 points and Cassie Schrock notched a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Foul trouble was Temple's undoing in the first half as the Eagles scored 13 points at the line compared to the Owls' two. Eastern Michigan also scored 13 points off 12 Temple turnovers.
Temple led only once in the half, and briefly, at 11-10 before a 9-0 Eastern Michigan run gave the Eagles a 19-11 lead at the midway point.
Despite not making a field goal over an eight-minute span down the stretch of the first half, Eastern Michigan was able to maintain its lead by hitting free throws. The Eagles then scored three unanswered buckets in the final minute to take a 34-22 lead into halftime.
Temple came out strong in the second half and used a 10-2 opening run to narrow the margin to four, 36-32, but the comeback was short-lived.
Eastern Michigan answered with a 14-2 run of its own to take its largest lead of 16, 50-34 with 10:26 remaining in the half.
The Owls battled back to within 11 at 8:39, but would come no closer until the final minute of the game when a trey from McCarthy narrowed the margin to nine with 32 seconds on the clock.
Temple will be back on the road after the holiday break, traveling to face #4 Duke on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
