Day One Results
KINGSTON, R.I. – After an impressive display in the first day of competition at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships hosted in University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House, the Temple men's track & field team is sitting in first place with 48 points after four scored events.
“It was a great first day, but like I told the team it's a two day event,” commented head coach Eric Mobley. “Hopefully we can enter tomorrow with the same enthusiasm, put some things together, and put together another great day.”
Leading the way as they have been all season are the Owls' weight throw competitors. Seniors Bryce Buffaloe and Grant West finished one-two in the event, with tosses of 61-09-50 and 58-11.25 respectively.
Also scoring big for Temple was senior Tim Boeni, taking the title in the long jump and tying a 17-year old meet record with a leap of 24-03.75. Two other Owls – junior Miles Dryden and freshman Dylan Pensyl – scored valuable points finishing third and fourth in the event with jumps of 23-00.75 and 23-00.00, respectively.
In the pole vault, junior Brian Smith placed sixth with a jump of 13-09.75. Junior Mike May also took a sixth place showing, running a time of 14:56.03 in the 5000m run.
Senior Alex Schiavi, Temple's lone heptathlon competitor, took first place finishes in the high jump (6-06-25) and shot put (36-00.25), while finishing third in the 55m dash (6.87) and long jump (21-00.75). The senior is in prime contention for the title in second place (2767 pts), with just the 55m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m run to go on Saturday.
In qualifying action, junior Emmanuel Freeland made Saturday's 55m dash finals, running a preliminary time of 6.50. Freeland also qualified for the 200m finals, posting a qualifying time of 22.34. Boeni also qualified for the finals in the event with a time of 22.77.
In the 55m hurdles qualifying, senior Josue Louis made the finals running a preliminary time of 7.69. Classmate Brad McFadden made the cut for the 400m dash finals, qualifying in a time of 50.97.
Look for junior Lou Parisi in the 500m run finals, qualifying with a time of 1:06.25. Classmate Aaron Taylor ran the second-best 800m run qualifying time of the day, advancing to the finals with a time of 1:57.92.
The Cherry and White look to capitalize on their success of day one in action tomorrow, starting at 9:00 a.m. with the men's high jump finals. Live stats will be available through the A-10 website.
