DAYTON, Ohio – With second place in the Atlantic 10 on the line, it was the Dayton Flyers (21-6, 9-3) who came away with a 71-63 win against Temple women's basketball on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (20-7, 9-3) struggled on offense, particularly in the first half, and never completely dug out of the hole in the second half.
While the two teams are now tied for second place in the conference standings, Dayton would hold the tiebreaker by virtue of the win. Two regular-season games remain for both teams. Temple had won five straight prior to the loss.
Kristen McCarthy scored a game-high 18 points, and LaKeisha Eaddy scored 13. Marli Bennett had a career day despite the loss, notching her first career double-double with a career-high 15 points and career-high 11 rebounds.
Eaddy hit a three-pointer on Temple's first possession, but the Owls went cold after that, going 0-for-11 from the field before Bennett hit TU's second trey near the 12-minute mark.
Solid defense helped minimize the damage caused by the cold spell, and Dayton's largest lead during the stretch was only six, 9-3.
Qwedia Wallace put a couple more points on the board at the free throw line, and Bennett's three pulled the Owls within one at 9-8. Wallace soon hit TU's first two-point bucket to give Temple a 10-9 lead at the midway point of the half.
The lead would be the Owls' last as momentum shifted back to the Flyers who went on to lead by as many as 12 down the stretch. Temple shot just 22 percent from the field in the half, and trailed 31-21 at the break.
Although Dayton hit two treys early in the second half, Temple came out firing and sank nine of its first 12 field goal attempts of the second half and narrowed the margin to three, 43-40 at 14:17. The Owls dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Flyers 15-5 in the opening eight minutes of the second half.
Temple began lagging on defense down the stretch as the Flyers had their way in the paint and extended their lead back to 10 just under the eight-minute mark.
The Owls battled to with five before their shooting woes returned. TU was scoreless for a five-minute stretch until under the two-minute mark, in which time the Owls also committed seven turnovers.
Temple was within eight points with 1:40 remaining, but fouling was fruitless as Dayton went 20-for-21 at the charity stripe in the contest including a perfect 8-of-8 in the final two minutes.
Temple will also play its next game on the road, traveling to Richmond for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The Owls will then return home for their final regular season game against George Washington at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
