PHILADELPHIA
– Seniors Melissa Parker and Kristin Howell, along with sophomore Kamali Thompson and freshman Mikayla Varadi, have been selected to the field of 144 competitors at the 2010 NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Championships, held at Harvard University in Boston, Mass. The event gets underway Thursday, March 25 and runs to Sunday, March 28.

“Coming out of a very strong region, we are pleased to have four fencers selected for the Championships,” said head coach Nikki Franke. “This is an experienced group and we expect very good things to happen. It has been a good year for the team and it is nice to return to the Tournament once again.”

Parker will be making her fourth trip to the Big Dance, earning All-America honors in her last three seasons. Howell travels to compete in the Championship for the third-straight season, earning All-America honors twice.

Thompson made her debut last season, and returns this year to compete again in sabre. Varadi appears in the field for the first time, fencing foil. Sophomore Alyssa Lomuscio qualified for the tournament, but will be an alternate in women's foil as NCAA rules state only two fencers from each school are allowed per weapon.

Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four fencers fence semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the losers being awarded a tie for third place. Absolute ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a fence-off.

An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.

The 2010 NCAA Championships will run March 25-28 at Harvard University's Gordon Track Center in Boston, Mass.
