Temple Women's Gymnastics Set To Host 2010 ECAC Championships On Saturday

Owls have eyes set on title in front of home crowd

PHILADELPHIA – McGonigle Hall will be the site of the 2010 ECAC Women's Gymnastics Championships, and the Temple women's gymnastics team is ready to put on a strong showing for their home crowd. The Championships are slated for March 27, with action beginning at 12:00 p.m. All the action will be streamed live, via Owlsports.com All-Access.

Brown, Cornell, Penn, William & Mary, Yale, and defending champion Towson will all converge on North Broad Street this Saturday, vying against the Owls for the conference title.

“The team, the coaching staff and I are very excited to be hosting the 2010 ECAC Women's Gymnastics Championships,” commented head coach Aaron Murphy. “We hope that hosting the championships will boost our team's confidence, since they will be in front of their home crowd. In the last three meets of the season we have really shown our consistency and hope to carry that into Saturday by staying in the top three at the end of the day.”

The Owls are currently ranked fifth among teams competing Saturday, boasting a team season average of 188.644 and a regional qualifying score of 189.045. A season-high of 191.025 came at the Penn-Quad Meet, where Temple placed third.

Leading the way all-around this season has been freshman Jean Alban. Boasting a season average of 37.411, Alban tallied a season-high 37.850 against Bridgeport.

On balance beam, the Owls have two athletes ranking in the top ten. Sophomore Corrine Williams ranks eighth with a regional qualifying score of 9.665, while junior Katie Canning is 10th with a score of 9.640.

Canning also leads the way on floor for Temple, owning a regional qualifying score of 9.725 to rank eighth. She also boasts a regional qualifying score of 9.705 on vault, ranking 11th in the conference.

Junior Chelsea Troutman tallied a regional qualifying score of 9.505 on uneven bars, leading the team and ranking 20th in the conference.

The 2010 ECAC Women's Gymnastics Championships will be held Saturday, March 27 at 12:00 p.m. in Temple University's McGonigle Hall. Admission for adults is $5.00, with children and student tickets costing $3.00.  The women's gymnastics team will also be celebrating Alumni Homecoming.
