National Champion Duke Highlights 2010-11 Men's Basketball Non-Conference Schedule

6.17.10 | Men's Basketball

Eleven postseason teams provide for challenging slate for Owls

Schedule

PHILADELPHIA -
Eleven postseason teams, including defending NCAA champion Duke, are on Temple's 2010-11 men's basketball schedule announced today by the Temple University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Besides Duke, the Owls' schedule features eight other teams that participated in the 2010 NCAA Tournament (California, Georgetown, Maryland, Notre Dame, Ohio, Texas A&M, Villanova and Wisconsin). One NIT team (Seton Hall) and one CBI participant (Akron) are also among the Owls' opponents this coming season.

“Our non-conference schedule was ranked #1 for the greater part of last season and this year's is clearly more challenging,” Temple head coach Fran Dunphy said.

For the first time since the 2000-01 season Temple will open with consecutive home games at the Liacouras Center.

The three-time defending Atlantic 10 Champions tip-off their season on November 12 with a home game against Seton Hall. The Owls follow that with a home date against Toledo on November 14.

Following an 11-day lay-off, Temple travels to Orlando Thanksgiving weekend (11/25, 26 & 28) to take part in the prestigious Old Spice Classic to be held at the Fieldhouse at ESPN Wide World of Sports® Complex. The field for the fifth annual Old Spice Classic will include 2010 NCAA participants Boston College, California, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Georgia, Manhattan and Texas A&M round out the eight teams.

The Owls start December with a road trip to Central Michigan (Dec. 1) and follow that with a demanding two games, Maryland (Dec. 5) in the Children's Charities Foundation Game at the Verizon Center and Georgetown on December 9 at the Liacouras Center.

The Hoyas' visit is the beginning of a three-game homestand that features Mid-American Conference foes Akron (Dec. 12) and Northern Illinois (Dec. 18). A road game at Ohio (Dec. 22) closes out the MAC portion of the Owls' schedule.

A date with Villanova on Dec. 29 at the Pavilion opens Temple's Philadelphia Big 5 schedule. The Owls also host Penn at the Liacouras Center (Jan. 19) before closing their non-conference schedule with a road trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a clash with the defending National Champion Duke Blue Devils. Duke will visit Philadelphia in 2011-12.

Temple, projected by many media outlets as a Top 25 team in 2010-11, returns three starters from last year's squad that ended the season 29-6 and ranked 12th in the Associated Press final poll.
