AMBLER, Pa.
– Junior Tyler Witmer found the net twice in the second half of Wednesday's match to lead the Temple men's soccer team (2-4-2) past Rutgers (3-3-1), 2-0. Witmer's two goals, combined with senior keeper Brett Mollon's solid performance in net, were enough to secure the win over the Owls' Big East opponent.

Even with several dangerous chances in the first – specifically from the Owls, the score remained scoreless at the break. Sophomore midfielder Cody Calafiore connected with sophomore forward Matt MacWilliams on a cross in the 27th minute. MacWilliams trapped the pass and slipped by a defender as the ball rolled just out of reach into Rutgers' keeper Adam Klink.

Temple found a way to get on the board in the 59th minute when sophomore Andrew Dodds found Witmer on a cross. Witmer turned and settled at the 18, launching a shot past Klink to the upper right ninety for his first goal of the game.

Rutgers answered with some offense of their own as they attempted to even the score in the 73rd minute. Mollon dove to his left and smothered what looked like a sure-goal for the Scarlet Knights.

The Scarlet Knights continued their attack until sophomore defender Billy Kappock hit a great ball off the bounce out of his own backfield, over all the RU defenders to find a streaking Witmer. Witmer beat the keeper one-on-one to seal the game with his second goal of the match.

Temple continued to pressure offensively.  In the 85th minute, recently inserted freshman Jake Lister blasted a ball at the net that Rutgers' keeper Klink deflected off the post. Temple outshot Rutgers 18-15 in the game, and 13-7 in the second half.

Mollon earned his third shutout of the season making two saves, now owning a record of 2-4-2.  He is now tied for second all-time in Temple history with current volunteer assistant head coach and former Owl keeper Pat Hannigan with 20 career wins.

The Owls look to carry this momentum into their next match Saturday, October 2, when they go on the road to face La Salle in a Philadelphia Soccer Six match.
