Thirteen Temple Student-Athletes Earn Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area honors

Owls have most honorees among 28 Philadelphia area schools

PHILADELPHIA – Thirteen Temple University student-athletes, the most by any of the 28 Philadelphia area schools, were named to the 2010-11 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Spring teams released on September 23. The teams are selected by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The Owls had three of the six members of the men's tennis squad - juniors Mansur Gishkaev and Filip Rams, along with sophomore Kacper Rams, Filip's brother. There were two TU representatives on both the men's crew team (seniors Nick Contino and John Masterson) and women's rowing team. (junior Kara Jackson and sophomore Joanna Sutor). Rounding out the Cherry and White Academic honorees are senior Ryan Ferguson (baseball), junior Missy Schweitzer (women's lacrosse), senior Elyse Steiner (women's tennis) senior Andrew Mason (golf), sophomore Victoria Gocht (women's track) and senior Bob Keogh (men's track).

To qualify, student-athletes need to have a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be at least a sophomore at their institutions. The only two schools other than Temple to have double-digit honorees were Haverford and Villanova, each with 10 student-athletes on the 11 teams recognized.
