Fifteen Owl Teams Sport Better than a 3.0 GPA
PHILADELPHIA - Temple University athletic teams had a very successful fall season … in the classroom.
This fall the combined term GPA for the 521 Temple student-athletes increased for the second consecutive semester, with 15 teams achieving a 3.0 a semester grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater. Men's gymnastics (3.50) led all men's teams, while women's cross country (3.41) was the top women's team for the semester. In a year's time, 12 teams improved upon their semester GPA.
Through the fall semester 15 teams achieved a cumulative - combining all coursework for all team members - GPA of 3.0 or greater, an increase of three teams since the end of the spring. Men's gymnastics (3.50) sported the best cumulative team GPA for a men's team, while field hockey (3.40) led all women's teams.
Individually, 52 percent of all TU student-athletes had a 3.0 GPA or greater last semester, an increase of five percent. It marked the highest percentage since the fall of 2009.
“It is a day of celebration for Temple Athletics,” Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw said. “Our head coaches and academic support staff are to be congratulated for playing critical roles in the student-athletes' success on and off the field of competition. We are most proud of our student-athletes' success in the classroom.”
