Mahoney Shatters School Record in One-Mile Run; Owls Complete PSU National Open

Senior Travis Mahoney competed in the one-mile run and had one of the strong finishes in the nation to date this season. In Saturday's finale at the Penn State National Open, Mahoney claimed sixth place in the one-mile run with a time of 4:02.40, shattering the school record, which was set back in 1982 by George Steinbronn.

Not only did Mahoney break a Temple recird that has stood for the last 29 years, he also met IC4A qualifying standards and landed the sixth fastes time in the one-mile run in the entire nation this year.

A day after helping the Owls to a first place finish in the distance medley relay on Frday evening at the Penn State National Open, sophomore Will Kellar met another IC4A qualifying mark with his first place finish in Saturday's 1000-meter relay. Kellar completed the race in an elapsed time of 2:28.94, which was just ahead of teammate freshman Cullen Davis's second place finish with his IC4A qualifying time of 2:29.80.

Before the day wrapped up Gabe Pickett also had a strong performance wiith his landing of 14.30 meters in the triple jump.

More collectively, the Owls reached an IC4A mark as a unit, as they completed the 4x400 meter relay in 3:18.89 to surpass the standards. Overall in the event, Temple placed 13th with their foursome comprised on Alan Harding, Lionel Wilson, Damien Myers and Alex McGee.

For the second straight day multi-event competitor freshman Derek Forthun competed in the heptathlon. In Saturday's go-around, Forthun placed 7th overall, as he took seventh place finishes in the 60 meter hurdles (9.36) and the 1000 meter run (2:52.08). Forthun rounded out his events with a ninth place finish on the pole vault (3.25 meters).

From here, the Owls will set their sights to next Saturday's meet in Kingston, R.I. for the Rhode Island Invitational.
