Scheck Makes Career-High 12 Saves; Men's Soccer Secures Third Consecutive Shutout In 2-0 Win Over Saint Joseph's
11.3.12 | Men's Soccer
AMBLER— Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Scheck turned away a career-high 12 shots and stood strong in net, as he nailed down his third straight shutout in Saturday's, 2-0, victory over Philadelphia Soccer Six rival Saint Joseph's at the Ambler Sports Complex. Temple, who now awaits its seeding and opponent for this week's Atlantic 10 Tournament in Charlotte, clinched its fourth 10-win season under head coach David MacWilliams, who is now just one win away from the 100th of his 13-year coaching career.
Getting the start on Senior Day, Andrew Dodds made it a memorable one for himself. After he, along with Cody Calafiore, Billy Kappock and Homero Rodriguez were honored for their commitment to the Temple men's soccer program prior to kickoff, Dodds tallied the game-winning goal for the Owls (10-5-3, 6-1-2) in the 20th minute.
Helping to put the Owls on the board first, sophomore Willie Chalfant flipped a pass to freshman Josh Tagland, who found Dodds outside the top-right corner of the box, where the West Chester, Pa. native blasted the ball by SJU senior keeper Andrew D'Ottavi, who leads the A-10 in goals against average and saves.
Putting the game virtually out of reach with over five minutes to play, junior Ryan Bradbury found redshirt sophomore Chas Wilson, who was one-on-one with the keeper, before firing the ball into the back of the net.
The Hawks (5-11-2, 1-6-2-) threw several threatening chances at Scheck. Of their 18 shots, 12 were targeted the second-year netminder. Freshman Tim Lazorko ripped a game-high seven shots, five of which were denied by Scheck. On a play late in the second half, Alex Critzos nearly knotted the game at one a piece in the 70th minute. Blasting a shot at the left side of the net, Scheck made a sensational dive to his right to stop the ball with his chest, keeping the match in the Owls' favor.
In eight games, seven of which were starts, Scheck has collected five shutouts, while conceding only twice all season, lowering his goals against average to a microscopic 0.27.
Making a major impact to the defense this season has been Kappock, who has played in every single game during his four-year carreer at Temple.. On Saturday, the Howell, N.J. native made the 74th consecutive start, giving him the longest streak in program history.
With the victory, Temple is now undefeated in 11 of its 13 games and closes out its home slate with one of its most successful in program history, owning a 6-1-1 record at the Ambler Sports Complex.
Holding their opponent scoreless for the third consecutive match marks the first time that the Owls defensive unit had done so since 2004 when it shut out Fordham, Duquesne and Saint Bonaventure.
The Owls will now await their seeding and opponent for this week's Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament in Charlotte. Temple, who will be appearing in the conference tournament for the third straight season and for the fourth time in the last five years, will be making its final bid for an A-10 Championship before moving to the Big East next season.
