PHILADELPHIA – Joe Giunta, who has served as the Director of Athletics and Recreation at Cabrini College for the last four years, returns to Temple University as the senior associate athletic director for sports administration, Temple Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw announced on Tuesday.
Giunta, who begins his new duties on March 8, will be responsible for ensuring that Temple's student-athletes are given the administrative support and resources necessary to be academically and athletically successful and to ensure that all operations are conducted within University, Conference, and NCAA rules. He will oversee football, men's basketball, and baseball as well as the athletic training, equipment, facilities, and strength & conditioning departments.
“Joe Giunta was selected from an exceptional group of candidates, during a national search, for this position,” Bradshaw said. “His prior successful experience in our department, during unprecedented growth and success for Temple Athletics, will be invaluable to us moving forward.”
Giunta previously served as the Owls' associate athletic director for sports administration for five years before taking the reigns at Cabrini in 2008. During his tutelage, the Owls became a full-time football-only member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in 2007 and have become the sixth most-winning Division I men's basketball program all-time.
“To say that my family and I are excited to return to North Broad Street and Temple University Athletics would be a great understatement,” Giunta said. “My first tenure at Temple left a tremendous impact on me both personally and professionally. I am grateful to Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw, his staff, and the University for this opportunity to return in this new and exciting role considering how the University has grown and the Department has thrived. I look forward to re-establishing as well as creating new relationships with all Temple Owls.”
At Cabrini, Giunta oversaw 16 varsity teams, club sports and recreation activities and an active community health and fitness center. In 2008-09, Giunta's first year saw the Cavaliers sweep the Presidents' Cups Overall, Men and Women's standings in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC).
The Cavaliers captured the Overall and Women's President's Cups in 2009-10 under Giunta's guidance. The Blue & White finished second in the men's standings. In 2010-11, Cabrini finished second in the men's listings, and third in both the overall and women's standings.
At Temple (2003-08), Giunta played an integral role in the hiring of two of Temple's most successful head coaches - current men's basketball head coach Fran Dunphy and former football head coach Al Golden, now head coach at the University of Miami (Fla.).
His responsibilities included contest scheduling for football and men's basketball, as well as oversight of men's soccer, golf, baseball, men and women's tennis, and men's crew; alumni/donor relations, and development of athletic department personnel. He also oversaw the university's athletic facilities, athletic training, equipment and the strength and conditioning area. Giunta also served on the Atlantic 10 Conference baseball committee.
Giunta's resume includes seven years at Neumann University, including a three-year tenure (2000-03) as director of athletics. With the Knights, Giunta managed all marketing and fundraising activities, coordinated scheduling and transportation for 15 athletic programs, and maintained the College's web site and five athletic venues.
At Neumann, Giunta aided several on-campus committees, including the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Task Force. He also worked closely with the Center for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development, assisting in the ongoing development of coaches and student-athletes.
As a student-athlete at Neumann, Giunta was a two-sport athlete, lettering in men's basketball and tennis. He was a member of Neumann's inaugural class of its Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.
After graduating in 1993 with a bachelor of arts degree in communications, he served as the director of alumni relations and special programs at his alma mater (1994-96). In addition to playing an instrumental part in two consecutive record-breaking annual giving campaigns, Giunta was responsible for organizing, implementing and evaluating special event programs.
Prior to returning to Neumann in 2000, Giunta was the director of athletics at St. Edward High School in Cleveland, Ohio for three years. He supervised an athletics department that boasted 14 interscholastic programs. Giunta's role included supervising a staff of more than 60 coaches, scheduling athletic contests in the state of Ohio and across the country, ticket sales management, and monitoring student-athlete eligibility and participation.
Giunta earned a master's in sports administration and facility management from Ohio University in 1997.
Giunta and his wife Colleen have infant twin sons, Braydon and Gavin, and reside in Springfield, Pa. Colleen (Dorrian) earned her undergraduate degree from Cabrini in 2002 and a master's degree in 2004. She played four seasons with the women's basketball team and remains the program's all-time leader in career blocks (185) and was named PAC Player of the Year in 2002-03.
