PHILADELPHIA – Temple University honored its best in athletics, both on and off the field, at its 10th annual Breakfast of Champions Wednesday morning. In all, over 400 Temple student-athletes were recognized for academic and athletic accomplishments.
Football's Pat Boyle (Towson, Md.) was named the PNC Male Student-Athlete of Year, sharing the honor with basketball's Juan Fernandez. It marked the first co-recipients of the PNC Male Student-Athlete of the Year in the event's history.
Senior Wayne Tribue (York, Pa.) was the male recipient of the Temple Teammates Community Service Award. The Temple Teammates Award is given to student-athletes who have demonstrated leadership qualities in the area of community service, inspiring others to engage in similar selfless civic endeavors for the purpose of improving the quality of life for those in the local community.
A 2011 first-team All-MAC honoree, Boyle was cited on the 2012 and 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the 2011 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team. A 2011 ECAC All-Star and two-year starter, Boyle started all 13 games at left tackle last fall, helping Temple to the most rushing touchdowns and yards in a season. The recipient of the 2011 Owl Club Academic Award, he played in the inaugural AstroTurf NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January. The psychology major was part of the winningest Senior Class in Temple football history.
A third-team All-MAC honoree, Tribue started all 13 games at right guard. He also saw action as a member of the field goal unit. Tribue and his fellow offensive linemen combined for 147 starting appearances. Providing great protection, the offensive line gave up no sacks in four games this season. Tribue was named to the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his community service work. He was honored during a halftime ceremony at the Sugar Bowl. Tribue played in the 2012 Casino Del Sol All-Star Game in January.
Additionally, junior WR Ryan Alderman (Downingtown, Pa.) and junior LB Matt Falcone (Palmerton, Pa.) were cited on the President's Honor Roll (for a cumulative 3.5 to 4.0 grade-point average) for the second consecutive year. Alderman is a business major, while Falcone is studying finance.
Twenty-two Owls were cited on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for sporting a cumulative 3.0 to 3.49 GPA: senior DB David Abror (York, Pa.), junior FB Wyatt Benson (Philadelphia, Pa.), senior OL Pat Boyle (Towson, Md.), senior OL Sean Boyle (Towson, Md.), junior TE Matthew Brookhart (Spring Grove, Pa.), junior DB Tomas Cabrera (Hanover, Pa.), r-freshman WR John Christopher (Ormond Beach, Fla.), r-freshman LB Chris D'Esposito (Wolcott, Conn.), r-freshman RB Hassan Dixon (Germantown, Md.), sophomore WR Jalen Fitzpatrick (Harrisburg, Pa.), senior DB Justin Gildea (Hollidaysburg, Pa.), r-freshman PK Nick Holland (Brookfield, Wis.), r-freshman OL Eric Lofton (Lumberton, N.J.), r-freshman P/PK Tyler Mayes (Downingtown, Pa.), r-freshman QB Chad McCloskey (Gloversville, N.Y.), sophomore OL Adam Metz (Hummelstown, Pa.), r-freshman OL Will Rathbone (Gainesville, Fla.), r-freshman RB Spencer Reid (Villanova, Pa.), r-freshman PK Patrick Toole (Wallkill, N.Y.), junior TE Dan VanNorton (Berwyn, Pa.), senior OL Martin Wallace (New York, N.Y.), and r-freshman LB Desmond Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.).
