PHILADELPHIA – Coming off back-to-back postseason appearances and getting ready to make their last go-around in the Atlantic 10 Conference before moving to the Big East in 2013, 13-year head coach David MacWilliams and the Temple men's soccer team have announced their 2012 schedule of opponents. After exhibition matches against Towson and Lafayette, the Owls will make their way to Harrisonburg, Va. on Aug. 31 to kick off the new season against James Madison.
“We have a very challenging schedule that includes two tough tournaments and always a very challenging conference schedule,” MacWilliams said. “The goal is always to win. If we can create offensive chances for ourselves and get consistency from our goal scorers, we should have a successful year.”
The meeting with the Dukes, not only will be a test right off the bat, as JMU went all the way to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last fall, but it will be part of a weekend tournament that JMU is hosting. On Sunday, Sept. 2, the Owls will go up against Atlantic Coastal Conference power Virginia Tech to round out play for the first weekend of the regular season.
From there, the Owls will have nine days off and then will make their home debut when they welcome the Manhattan Jaspers for a midweek afternoon match on Sept. 11 at the Ambler Sports Complex.
After the one game home respite, Temple will make its first trip to the west coast since 2006 during the weekend of Sept. 14-16, as it will visit the state of California, where it will take on California Polytechnic State and California State-Northridge out of the Big West. In 2006, the Owls went to Nevada to battle UNLV and Denver.
Following their furthest trip in six years, the Owls return to Ambler to host a pair of weekend matches Sept. 21-23—one with Saint Peter's and the other with Howard.
With a Soccer 6 match on the slate next, Temple will remain in the Delaware Valley and will make its way over to Bryn Mawr, Pa. on Sep. 25 for their final non-conference head-to-head meet affair with Villanova, as the two will become Big East rivals the following season.
Non-conference play comes to a close for the Owls on Sept. 29 when they meet the Rider Broncs under the lights out in Lawrenceville, N.J.
Temple's final push for an A-10 title gets underway Oct. 5 when it welcomes St. Bonaventure to Ambler. The opening weekend of league play concludes with a home match against Duquesne on Oct. 7.
A week later, the Owls visit the New England region, where they will make stops to play Rhode Island and Massachusetts Oct. 12 and Oct. 14, respectively.
Making its way back to Ambler the following weekend, Temple hosts the traditional toughest combination of opponents, as Charlotte and Saint Louis roll in for matches during the weekend of Oct. 19-21. Both dates will feature a doubleheader at the Ambler Sports Complex, as the men and women will each play home matches on both days.
Coming down the stretch, the road does not get any easier, as the Owls play out their final two road A-10 games with trips to Fordham and then over to La Salle Oct. 26-28, while looking to get some revenge.
Both Fordham and La Salle reached the A-10 Tournament in 2011. The Rams defeated the Owls on the final day of the regular season in overtime to claim the 2011 A-10 regular season title. Two days prior to that, the Owls punched their ticket to the postseason by defeating the Explorers, but went on to lose 1-0 to La Salle in the first round of the conference tournament out in St. Louis.
Temple closes out the season on its home grass with a Soccer 6 match with the Saint Joseph's Hawks. Prior to the Saturday afternoon kickoff on Nov. 3 the Senior Day ceremony will be held to honor Cody Calafiore, Andrew Dodds, Billy Kappock, Matt MacWilliams and Homero Rodriguez.
Following that, the Owls will be hoping to make their way to the A-10 Tournament during the week of Nov. 7-11 at a venue yet to be determined. Temple will be looking to make an A-10 postseason appearance for the third straight year and fourth time in the last five years.
