Men's Soccer Falls To Villanova In Soccer Six Match, 1-0

9.25.12 | Men's Soccer

VILLANOVA— Playing for city pride, Temple traveled up the main line to take on the Villanova Wildcats for its first Philadelphia Soccer Six match of the season. In a very balanced attack, the Owls fell by a count of 1-0 at West Campus Soccer Complex, as senior Kyle McCarthy's goal in the 41st minute proved to be the only score needed in the contest to determine a victor on Tuesday.

The Wildcats pressured the Owls zone early on and tested junior goalkeeper Bobby Rosato quickly in the match, as VU blasted four of the game's first five shots. Temple would generate its own chances midway through the opening half, including senior Homero Rodriguez's chance that went wide of goalkeeper John Fogarty.

Coming off of Sunday's shutout over Howard, Rosato had another strong day in net, making four saves in the match, but the ball that beat him in the 41st minute proved to be costly, as it dropped the Owls to 3-4-1 on the year.

Right before the teams went into the halftime huddle, Alec Weiss threw in a ball that was laced right over the middle and in position for McCarthy to put the header on it for the game's only goal.

Looking to even the score in the second half, the Owls came out string and outshot the Wildcats, 9-8 for the half.

Junior Nolan Hemmer nearly deadlocked the match in the 54th minute, but his header was directed in the way of Fogarty, who made six saves on the day to nail down his second shutout of the season.

The Owls demonstrated solid ball movement on a drive later in the half, leading to redshirt sophomore Chas Wilson launching a shot that nearly found the top left corner, flicking off the crossbar and out of play.

Temple and Villanova finished with an identical figure in the shots category, as each had 16.  Freshman Jared Martinelli led the Owls with four shots; two of which were sent in on goal.

Up next for the Owls will be its final non-conference match of the season when they take on the Rider Broncs on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. from Lawrenceville, N.J.
