PHILADELPHIA – Temple Women's Soccer returns to Ambler on Friday as it gets set to welcome the Iona Gaels for a 4:00 p.m. match before heading to Princeton to face the Tigers Sunday at Noon. After a tough 2-0 road loss to city-rival Penn under the lights of Rhodes Field on Sunday evening, Temple looks to improve to 2-0-0 at home in 2012 and remain undefeated in its last five matches at the Ambler Sports Complex, dating back to last year. Temple is 1-3-1 in the young season.
Senior Kate Yurkovic is the leading scorer for the Owls this year, scoring two of team's three goals. She has four points in the five games she's played, which also leads the team. Senior Jourdan Brill has Temple's other goal, which came in a 1-3 loss to Hofstra.
Owls' redshirt senior goalkeeper has one shutout in 2012 and is looking to post her fifth in a row in Ambler. In the latter minutes of Sunday's contest against the Quakers, freshman Shauni Kerkhoff got her first taste of the collegiate level and stood strong, as she was tested just moments into her debut and passed, by making a big stop to limit any further damage from Penn.
Iona (1-2-1) is coming off of a 2-1 double overtime win against Rhode Island, which was its second double overtime game of the year. The victory over the Rams came after consecutive losses to Seton Hall and La Salle. Just five games into the year, the Gaels are already facing their third opponent out of the Atlantic 10 Conference when they take on the Owls.
The Gaels have had production throughout their lineup with three different players scoring this season, while, getting solid defensive play in goal from junior Trista Rivera, who has made 29 saves and has a 1.13 goals against average in five games.
On Sunday, the Owls travel to Princeton where they will take on a Tigers' team that is off to a 0-1-1 start in 2012. Prior to this weekend's homestand at Roberts Stadium against Saint Joseph's and Temple, the Tigers held the Princeton Invitational last weekend, in which they lost to Wake Forest and tied Colgate.
Senior Jen Hoy has been the catalyst of the Tigers' offense, accumulating eight points on four goals. Goalkeepers senior Kristin Watson and sophomore Darcy Hargadon have split time in between the posts. Watson leads the way after replacing Hargadon in the second game with a 1.33 goals against average.
Temple holds the advantage in the all-time series with the Gaels, having an undefeated record of 2-0-0. In the Owls' season-opener in 2011, Temple pulled out a late victory, as it won on an own goal. The all-time series with Princeton is quite the opposite for the Owls, as they will be looking to pick up their first victory over the Tigers in program history. Princeton owns a record of 4-0-0 in the series with the Owls.
