AMBLER, Pa. –
The Temple Owls tied No. 24 UConn on Wednesday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex 1-1.  The tie gives the Owls their first point in American Athletic Conference play this season.

After letting the Huskies control play very early in the first half, the Owls battle the Huskies tough and played them even for the rest of the half.  Neither team could generate quality chances to score.

In the second half, the Huskies came out strong and were rewarded with a goal in the 62nd minute.  Nicholas Zuniga received a pass near midfield from Jakob Nerwinski and took it all of the way down to the box where he put a shot pass Dan Scheck into the top left corner of the net.

The Owls did not let the goal get them down, as they responded with their own goal in the 79th minute.  Off a foul, Jared Martinelli took a free kick and Robert Sagel headed the ball past the Huskies' goalie.  The goal was Sagel's second of the year.

Play remained scoreless after the second goal of the game.  Each team had a few chances in overtime, but both couldn't convert or were stopped by great defensive plays.

"UConn is a great team," Head coach David MacWilliams said.  "Our guys battled against them.  We came from behind a 1-0 deficit, and didn't give up.  We kept pushing and battling.  The team showed a lot of character in this game.  After our previous 3-0 loss to Louisville, our guys could have dropped their heads after falling down 1-0, but they didn't and were determined to not lose again."

Dan Scheck got the save for the Owls.  He made seven saves total in the game and thwarted many good chances for the Huskies.

"We got a free kick and converted," MacWilliams said about the Owl's lone goal.  "Robert Sagel has been a beast for us on defense, but we use him on set pieces as well.  He scored his second goal for us this season, and that's big time."

UConn, picked to win the conference by the coaches in the preseason, outshot the Owls 19-9 on the game.

The Owls take a short break from Conference play with a Philadelphia Soccer Six match on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Drexel.  The Dragons are 5-2-1 this season and coming on a five game winning streak into the match.
