Temple's Alderman Named Wueffel Trophy Finalist

11.12.13 | Football

Due to his outstanding performance on the field as well as off, senior wide receiver Ryan Alderman has been named a finalist for the 2013 Wuerffel Trophy. The award is named after former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, who led the Florida Gators to the 1996 national championship, played six years in the National Football League and has received national recognition for his humanitarian and community service efforts with Desire Street Ministries in New Orleans and around the country.

The Wuerffel Trophy honors the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with outstanding academic and athletic achievement.

Alderman, a fifth-year senior, originally joined the Temple squad as a walk-on in 2009, is now one of four captains for the Owls. He was also named one of the nine toughest guys on the team, which is represented by the wearing of a jersey number one through nine.

Off the field, Alderman is known for his continued service to the community throughout the Greater Philadelphia area. This year, Alderman was one of numerous Temple football players to volunteer with AWANA, a religious group that works to develop spiritually strong children and youth. Earlier this year, Alderman also took part in a team activity helping vendors in the famous Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia serve customers.

Alderman has also taken the time to help young football players learn to play the game the correct way, as he has here on North Broad in the last five years. This past summer, Alderman volunteered at a local youth football camp in Bensalem where he worked with children on mastering the basics of football.

On the field, Alderman is saving his best performance for his last year. On the season, Alderman leads the Owls with 385 yards stemming from 28 catches. He also has two touchdowns on the season, including a 51-yard strike against Idaho, which was his first career TD catch as well as a career long catch.

In the classroom, Alderman applies the same intense work ethic he has shown over the last five years on the gridiron. This past May, he graduated with a degree in Finance, in which he accumulated a 3.59 GPA over his four-year undergraduate span. Alderman is currently pursuing a master's degree in Finance from Temple's renowned Fox School of Business.

Alderman is one of 12 finalists for the award:

The 2013 Wuerffel Trophy will be presented to the winner at the All Sports Association's 45th Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, February 7, 2014.
