Men's Soccer Earns Several Awards from the American Athletic Conference

FRISCO, TEXAS – After a strong 2013 season in which Temple men's soccer exceeded the expectations of everyone in the American Athletic Conference, the Owls received several honors from the conference. The Temple coaching staff of head coach David MacWilliams and assistant coaches Brian Clarhaut, Evan Prybutok and Wendell Beres were named Coaching Staff of the Year and Robert Sagel and Jared Martinelli were named Second Team All-Conference while Sagel was also selected to the All-Rookie Team.  The Owls also won the Fair Play Award, which is given to the team that accumulates the fewest points: foul (one point), yellow card (five points) and red card (10 points).
The Temple coaching staff of head coach David MacWilliams and assistant coaches led the Owls to a successful season at 10-4-4, 3-1-4 in the American, and exceeded expectations after the Owls were picked last in the preseason coaches' poll. The strong season earned them recognition as Coaching Staff of the Year.
Martinelli was selected Second Team All-Conference after he leads the Owls in six goals and four assists for a total of 16 points. Martinelli scored a game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Memphis that gave the Owls their first ever win in the American Athletic Conference.
Sagel joined Martinelli on the second team while also being named to the All-Rookie Team.  He was one of 11 rookies selected to the team. Sagel had three goals and one assist to place fourth on the team and points. Sagel also helped lead the Owls to only allow 13 goals all season, and helped goalkeeper Dan Scheck tie the school record with nine shutouts.
