COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Temple Women's Gymnastics came out on top in Sunday's dual meet at Ursinus by putting up a season-high team score of 190.675 to outdo the Bears' 186.975 on Sunday afternoon . The Owls, who picked up their first meet win of the season, took first place in all four events and set new season-high team totals on uneven bars (47.745) and on the balance beam (48.65) in the process.
Having her sights set on reaching an all-around score of 38.000, junior Brittanie DeMeno accomplished her career-long goal. Against the Bears, she was granted a 38.200 to take first place through all four events to lead her squad. DeMeno's combined score included a career-best figure on bars, which was a 9.580.
Sophomore Alexis Arena (37.525) and senior Jess Alban (37.350) also performed in all four events to play as key roles in TU's first meet win of 2013.
Arena tied her career-best score and won the title on the vault, earning a 9.625, which stood as her highest score in all four events on Sunday, allowing her to outlast Ursinus' Kristin Aichele and Monica Durham.
Making her Temple debut, freshman Tara Kilkenny got the nod to perform for the Owls on bars at the last minute, due to freshman Hannah Popper dislocating her elbow during warm-ups.
Kilkenny was a catalyst for the Owls, who won the competition on bars for the first time this season. Her performance that earned her a score of 9.675 was sensational enough to rank as TU's top-finisher and third overall.
Sophomore Stephanie Verry had the best floor exercise on the day, scoring a 9.825, which was significantly 1.75 points higher than second place Stephanie Schmidt for Urisinus. DeMeno's routine that got her a 9.5 was strong enough to land her a third place score, slightly ahead of senior Margaret Walch's fourth place mark of 9.450.
First-year gymnast Taylor Rakus competed on the balance beam and set a new season-high with her 9.750, which surpassed her previous total by .50 points., while senior Jean Alban matched Rakus' 9.750, setting a new season-high and tying career-best score on the apparatus.
In what has been Temple's most consistent event this season, all five gymnasts that qualified for the team score on the balance beam, earned a 9.700 or higher. Junior Sylvie Borschel, Alban, and Rakus all earned like scores of 9.750, while Arena and junior Heather Zaniewski turned in 9.7's.
Looking to roll the momentum from their meet win over Ursinus, the Owls (3-13) will now prepare for the Towson Invite next Sunday (Feb. 17). Competition begins at 1:00 p.m.
