PHILADELPHIA—The No. 12 Temple men's gymnastics team held its first home meet of the season Saturday night in Pearson-McGonigle Hall. Welcoming top-ranked Penn State and No. 11 William & Mary, the Owls put up a season-best score of 421.300 in front of their family, friends, alumni and supporters, to earn a second place team score.Temple fell only to the No. 1 Nittany Lions (446.550), while outdoing The Tribe (417.750).
On the parallel bars, TU was led by senior Alex Tighe, who scored a 14.850 with an impressive routine, only to be outdueled by Penn State's Nestor Rodriguez (15.800).
Tighe followed his parallel bars with another stellar performance on the high bar, recording a 14.900, which was the highest score for any TU gymnast on the night. His high bar performance placed him fourth overall individually followed by teammate Allan Malone's 14.750 on high bar.
Senior Allan Malone finished third in the all-around posting a score or 83.100 behind Penn State's Felix Aronovich (88.800) and William & Mary's Daniel Potemski (84.400). Malone recorded his highest scores on high bars (14.750) and floor exercise (14.200).
In its first home meet, Temple had its best finishes in the floor exercise, rings, horizontal bars, and high bar— placing second as a team in each event.
Temple, whp started the meet on the floor exercise, totaled a value of 70.050, which was good enough to place them second out of the three teams. Penn State led the way in the event, scoring 72.850.
Malone and junior John Leonard scored a 14.200 to lead the Owls, placing them sixth overall on floor behind four Penn State gymnasts and one William &Mary student-athlete. Senior Evan Burke scored 14.100 with his strong routine.
Temple had four gymnasts score above a 14.000 on the pommel horse. Seniors Taylor Brana and Tighe tallied 14.500 and 14.350, respectively. Their impressive routines on the apparatus were followed up by junior Brendan Williams and sophomore Michael Bittner, scoring 14.300 and 14.100 points, which helped the Owls to score 70.500 as a team on the apparatus.
TU was led by Brana on rings when he performed a strong routine to earn a 14.800. Brana's solid routine placed him seventh among all individuals on the apparatus.
Freshman Evan Eigner was second on the Owls on rings, tallying a 14.450, while seniors Assaf Zoor (14.150) and Dash Sears (14.000) helped the Owls place as the runner-ups on the apparatus totaling 71.300.
Freshman Phil Pruett led the Owls with his vault exercise, scoring 14.300, which was good enough for seventh place overall. Additionally, sophomore Scott Haddaway, Burke and Leonard posted scores over 14.000 to help the Owls score a team total of 70.450.
From here, Temple (9-3) will look toward its meet against SUNY Brockport on Sunday (March 3) which will get underway at 2.00 p.m.
