Temple Women's Soccer Improves to 2-0 with a 4-0 Victory Over Delaware State

8.25.13 | Women's Soccer

DOVER, Del. – Temple women's soccer continued their good start to the 2013 season with a 4-0 victory over Delaware State on Sunday afternoon.   Four different players for Owls scored their first goals of the season in a dominating victory over the Hornets.

"The coaching staff was once again very impressed with the mature performance by the young squad," Coach O' Connor said. "The players took their, moved the ball around, and created good chances for themselves.  I'm very impressed by the four different goal scorers we had today.  Each goal was different from the others, and they didn't happen because of mistakes from the other team."

The Owls took control of the game from the very start and never gave it up.  They had 19 total shots in the game, with seven of them on goal.  The defense stepped up once again after the shutout of NJIT on Friday to only allow the Hornets one shot all game.

Captain Kaylee Harner scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute.  She took a pass from the top of the box to the left from Kelly Farrell and put it in the top corner.  Paula Jurewicz also got an assist on the goal.

15 minutes after the second half began, Kelly Farrell doubled the lead on a breakaway by placing the ball in the left corner.

Alyssa Kirk added another tally to the Owls' lead in the 77th minute.  After receiving the ball from a pass from Taylor Trusky, she dribbled it the length of the field and shot it pass the goalie in the left corner.

The final goal came from freshman Clara Guenter on her very first collegiate goal.  The goal was unassisted.

Goalie Shauni Kerkhoff continued her shutoff streak to start the season and improve her record to 2-0.  She made the save against the only shot the Hornets registered as Temple's defense prevented her from any pressure during the game.  She also managed to get two assists on Farrell and Kirk's goals.

Overall, seven Owls recorded points in the contest.  Farrell led the way with a goal and assist.

Up next for Temple is an away game at Mount St. Mary's on Thursday August 29.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.  "We're already focused on the next game," O'Connor said. "Winning a couple of games this year isn't what we are trying to do."

The Owls will look to start the season on a three game winning streak.  The last time Temple started the season 3-0 was in 1992, the second year of the program under Coach Eileen Richart.
