Martinelli Interview |Gallery

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple men's soccer defeated Wofford College 3-0 on Friday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex in the Owls' home opener. Jared Martinelli scored all three goals for the Owls, giving him his first career hat trick.

"It was a game of two halves," Head coach David MacWilliams said. "We were fortunate to score early. Right after it, Wofford dominated the play and have some chances. We were fortunate to get out of the first half 1-0."

"The second half we came out and scored. I think we changed the complexity of the game. It was really a tale of two halves. Basically we finished our chances and they didn't."

Martinelli scored the first goal less than five minutes into the game, taking a pass from Jake Lister and chipping it over a sliding goalkeeper. His second goal came four minutes into the second half. He scored on a header off a feed from Chas Wilson. Willie Chalfant set up Martinelli for his third goal in the 66th minute.

"Sometimes you worry about that sophomore jinx with players," MacWilliams said. "Jared scored 10 goals last year and already has four this season. Jared is really starting to play better and feel it."

The assists from Lister, Wilson, and Chalfant were all their first points of the season. Martinelli has all four goals in the Owls' two games of the 2013 season.

"We also need to get our other players scoring, or else other teams are going to key on Jared and focus on him," MacWilliams said. "We need to make sure that we have other guys who are capable of scoring. Unfortunately they just haven't found the net yet."

Goalkeeper Dan Scheck recorded another shutout for the Owls, making three saves off a total of 17 shots by the Terriers. Temple registered 10 shots with seven on goal.

Up next for the Owls is another non-conference home match this Sunday against Hofstra at 2:30 p.m. Hofstra is 1-0 this season with a 2-1 victory over Colgame
