Men's Soccer Defeats Hofstra 2-0

9.8.13 | Men's Soccer

Interviews

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –
Temple men's soccer continued its good start to the 2013 season with a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon over Hofstra at Ambler Sports Complex. Vaughn Spurrier and Robert Sagle had a goal each to lead the Owls over the Pride.

Vaughn Spurrier started the scoring for the Owls a little less than eight minutes into the first half. Stefan Mueller fed Spurrier to get the assist for his first point in the season. Spurrier scored his first goal of the season, after a season in which he recorded 10 assists but no goals.

Robert Sagel scored his first collegiate goal and points in the 65th minute of the second half. Off a corner kick from Jared Martinelli, Sagel used his 6'3" body to outleap everybody and head the ball past the goalie for an insurance goal for the Owls.

Goalie Dan Scheck recorded another shutout for the Owls, who haven't allowed a single goal this season. Scheck made four saves in the game, including a critical one on a breakaway from Hofstra player Chris Griebsch with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Scheck now has six straight regular season shutouts. He has eight shutouts in 13 career starts, allowing only three goals total.

Temple men's soccer is off to its best start since 1986, when they started 5-0. It's also the first time they have shut out its opponents in the first three games since 1980. John Boles coached both squads for the Owls.

The Owls continue non-conference play with another home game this Wednesday against Rider at 3:00 p.m. Rider is 2-0 after defeating Temple's rival Saint Joseph's 3-1 last week.
