Men's Soccer Heads to Memphis For Regular Season Finale

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer faces Memphis on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. for their last game in the 2014 regular season.  The Owls look to win their second American Athletic Conference game of the year.  With a victory Temple can finish as high as fifth in the conference.

HEADLINES
  • Temple is 2-12-2, 1-5-1 with the 2014 regular season almost at an end.  The Owls lost on the road to UConn 3-1 last Wednesday and at home on Saturday on Senior Day to Tulsa 2-1 in double overtime.
  • Sophomore defender Stefan Mueller scored his first collegiate goal against UConn that tied the score up in the second half.
  • 12 underclassmen have started a game for Temple.  17 total underclassmen have appeared in a game.
  • Five freshmen have started at least eight games for the Owls: midfielder Felipe Liborio (15 games), midfielder Miguel Polley (14), defender Mark Grasela (11), midfielder Brendon Creed (eight), and forward Olli Tynkkynen (11).
  • Senior goalkeeper Dan Scheck is currently third in career goals allowed average (1.04) behind Jeff Kraft's (1977-80) and Tony Pratico (2004-07), ninth in career saves (193) and fourth in career wins (16).
  • Sophomore defender Robert Sagel has played all 1,532 minutes of the season.  Sophomore defender Matt Mahoney is second in minutes played with 1,457.
  • Junior forward/midfielder Jared Martinelli is tied for sixth in career assists with 19. Martinelli has four assists this season, tops on the team.
  • Sagel, Scheck and Martinelli were selected to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team.  Scheck was voted by the coaches as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
  • Temple was predicted to finish fifth in the conference by the preseason coaches' poll.
  • Memphis comes into the game with a record of 8-6-2, 2-4-1.  The Tigers knocked off RV USF 2-1 on the road last Saturday to end a two game losing streak.
  • The Tigers were picked to finish seventh in the preseason conference poll.
  • Freshman forward Hector Cantele leads the team in scoring with seven goals and 16 points.
  • Senior forward Fakhry Khulfan is second on the team in scoring with 12 points from five goals and two assists while only starting six games this season.
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui has started all 16 games with a 1.17 goals allowed average.  Uzcategui has made 47 saves with a save percentage of .712 and helped the Tigers shutout opponents six times this season.
  • Temple won the first ever game between the two schools in dramatic fashion last season.  In a 2-1 win by the Owls, all three goals were scored in the last 11 minutes of the game. After two goals were scored off penalty kicks, Martinelli scored the game-winner with less than three minutes left.
