Women's Soccer Hopes to Create Some Magic in Orlando

PHILADELPHIA – The Owls will go on the road to Orlando, Fla. Friday. Temple will face  #9 seed SMU for the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. Temple is the #8th seed. The winner will take on the Quarterfinal host #1 UCF on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

SMU (6-13-0, 2-7-0 The American) enters the postseason on a five-game losing skid, with its last win coming over the Owls on Oct. 9. Freshman midfielder Claire Oates has been the biggest weapon for the Mustangs this season, as she leads the team in points (13) and goals (six). Oates' six goals are tied for ninth in The American. Friday's contest marks the fourth meeting between Temple and SMU, with the Mustangs winning all three previous matches. Earlier this season, SMU topped the Owls, 1-0, at Westcott Field behind a goal from senior Rikki Clarke. Bodden recorded her first shutout of the season in net. However, Temple did out-shoot SMU 15-3.

UCF earned its second consecutive regular season title this year after posting an 8-1-0 record in The American. The Knights only loss came to UConn. The NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's National Poll has UCF?ranked #19 this week. Senior forward Tatiana Coleman has been the biggest weapon for the Knights this season, as she leads the team in points (33), goals (12), and assists (9). Coleman's 12 goals and nine assists are tied for second in The American. Sunday's contest will mark the fourth meeting between the two schools, with the Knights winning all three previous matches. Earlier this season, UCF topped the Owls, 2-0, in?Ambler, Pa. behind goals from senior Alex Piercy and freshman Bridget Callahan.

•Temple is 11-7-1 with a 3-5-1 conference record for the 2014 season. The Owls finished 8th in the American Athletic Conference.
•Temple women's soccer entered the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Northeast Regional Poll at No. 9 on Tuesday.
•Temple is now tied for the most wins in program history with eleven wins in a season. The women's soccer program has only had two teams with eleven wins in a season. Those seasons were the 1991 inaugural season when they went 11-7-0 under head coach Elleen Richart and the 2000 season when they stood at 11-9-0 under head coach Seamus McWilliams.
•Temple women's soccer defeated Cornell 2-1 in double overtime on 9/14/14 to win the Cornell Classic. The Owls improved their winning streak to seven games, and broke the record for the longest winning streak in program history and set the bar for the best start in program history.
•Junior forward Kelly Farrell leads the Owls in points with 18. Farrell also leads the Owls in goals (eight), shots on goal (21), and shots on goal percentage (.636). Farrell also has two assists on the season. Farrell made the American Conference weekly honor roll twice on Sept. 15 and Oct. 6 for her outstanding play. Farrell is tied for third in game-winning goals, seventh in points, and tied for sixth in goals in the American Conference.
•Senior defender Alyssa Kirk is tied for second in points with nine. Kirk has registered three goals, three assists and is second in shots on goal percentage (.600). On senior day Kirk collected her 73rd game, which placed her sixth all-time in games played in Temple women's soccer history. Kirk won the American Athletic Conference Defender of the Week on Aug. 25th for her strong efforts.
•Redishirt-freshman forward Kayla Cunningham is tied for second in points with nine. Cunningham leads the Owls in shots with 50. Cunningham also has four goals and one assist on the season. Cunningham is ranked seventh in the American Conference in shots.
•Starting junior goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff currently boasts a 1.09 goals against average, .784 save percentage, six shutouts, along with recording 76 saves on the season. Kerkhoff is first all-time in save percentage (.810), goals against average (1.13),?and shutouts (17). Kerkhoff also ranks fifth all-time in saves with 234. Kerkhoff twice was the recipient of American Conference goalkeeper of the week on Sept. 1st and Sept. 8th. Kerkhoff also recieved American Conference weekly honor roll on Sept. 15th. Kerkhoff ranks 2nd in saves, 2nd in shutouts, 5th in save percentage and 7th in goals against average in the American Conference.
•Junior defender Erin Lafferty has recorded 2 goals and 1 assist this season. Lafferty recieved American Conference weekly honor roll on Sept. 29th for her strong defensive efforts.
•Redishirt-sophmore forward Gina DiTaranto is tied for second in goals (four), and third in points (eight) for the Owls. DiTaranto twice recieved American Conference weekly honor roll for her strong play on Aug. 25th and Sept. 1st.
•Junior midfielder Shannon Senour leads the Owls in assists (four) and is fourth in points (sixth).
