Women's Rowing Signs Six Recruits for 2015-16

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's rowing Rebecca Smith Grzybowski has announced the signing of six talented recruits who will join the Owls for the 2015-16 season. Temple will welcome Emma Alford (Grosse Ile, Mich.), Catie Gackowski (Midland Park, N.J.), Mariel Tucker (Pottstown, PA), Jenna Rosado (Northfield, N.J.), Allie Nussbaum (Andover, Mass.), and Rachel Kelley (Somers Point, N.J.).
 
"We are thrilled to welcome Emma, Catie, Rachel, Allie, Jenna & Mariel to Temple and to our team," said Grzybowski. "Without question this is our best recruiting class to date and we are confident that they will make an immediate impact."

Emma Alford is a 6-0 rower who has three varsity letters out of Grosse Ile High School. She led a crew that won the women's overall titles at the Wy-Hi and Hebda Cup regattas as a sophomore, while finishing second overall at the Wy-Hi Regatta as a junior, and third as a freshman. Alford was part of the team finished third in the state during her sophomore season. She also lettered with the sailing team, which captured the state championship in her freshman year. Alford, also a member of the marching band, plans to major in Primary Education while at Temple.

Gackowski is a 5-10 rower hailing from the Teterboro campus of the Bergen County Technical Schools. She has competed with the River Rowing Association since 5th grade, rowing for four seasons for the past eight years. Gackowski intends to major in Political Science and Journalism at Temple and hopes to participate in student-run publications and student government while on campus. Her older sister, Anna, is also a rower, and is a member of the Ohio State rowing team which has captured the past two NCAA Championships.

Mariel Tucker is a 5-7 rower from Owen J. Roberts High School, who has also competed for Vesper Boat Club. Her crews have raced at both club nationals and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, while winning the Steve Neczypor Memorial Regatta. Individually, Tucker's 2k erg score as a junior placed her fifth out of over 100 junior women at the Mainline Slide Event. A former girl scout with both bronze and silver awards, she is also accomplished filmmaker, placing second in the state of Pennsylvania at the PTA Reflections awards. Tucker, whose cousin is Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens, intends to major in Film at Temple.

Jenna Rosado is a 5-5 rower from Mainland Regional High School. Competing since the age of 12, her crew most recently captured gold at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, SRAA Nationals, and the county championships, while also placing in the top-10 at the US Rowing Youth National Championships. Rosado has also helped her program to Silver at Stotesbury Cup Regatta and a bronze medal finish at the state championships. A National Honor Society member, she is interested in Photography and intends to major in Film at Temple.

Allie Nussbaum is a 5-3 coxswain from who races with Greater Lawrence while attending Andover High School. An experienced athlete, she has participated in both the Head of the Charles Regatta and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. Nussbaum has also coxed boats at the youth national and the club national level. An honor roll student and also a triplet (bothers are Jimmy and Matt), she plans to major in Education at Temple.

Rachel Kelley is a 5-1 coxswain out of Mainland Regional High School. She led her varsity four boat to a 10th place finish at the Youth Nationals last year, and has competed at the varsity level since her sophomore year. Kelley's crews have also finished first at SRAA nationals and the Stotesbury Regatta, while also placing second at the city championships. A National Honor Society member, Kelley intends to major in Business at Temple.

"In developing our program, we place extreme value on finding student-athletes that align with our mission and culture," added Grzybowski. "With their speed, experience and enthusiasm for the trajectory of our program, these six women are a perfect fit for Temple and the future is looking very bright."

The Temple women's rowing team recently returned from their winter training trip and will next compete on March 21, taking on Lehigh & George Washington on the Schuylkill River.
