PHILADELPHIA - Four top-15 opponents are on the slate this coming Saturday for the 10th-ranked Temple fencing team, as the Owls head to nearby Penn for the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 24. The first poll of the season was released by CollegeFencing360 on Wednesday, with the Owls coming in at the 10th spot.
The action begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with Temple taking on Duke, the top team receiving votes outside of the top 10. Next up for the Owls will be a match against #9 Northwestern at 10:00 a.m., followed by Cornell at 11:30 a.m. Cornell is right behind Duke in the top 15, coming in at 12th in the voting.Â
After a break for lunch, Temple will face host and sixth-ranked Penn for a second time already this season. The Quakers won a close match against Temple a week ago, 15-12. After a bye at 3:00 p.m., Temple will face Johns Hopkins in its final match of the day at 4:30 p.m.
The Owls are 5-4 so far at this early point of the season. Head Coach Nikki Franke earned the 700th win of her career in the team's first dual meet of the season on Dec. 7. Temple has yet to fence at full strength due to some injuries, but individually a number of fencers have had success both in dual meets and at individual competitions. Freshman Safa Ibrahim has been impressive since her arrival in the fall, earning strong finishes for epee at the November NAC (second in junior women's epee), the Temple Open (fifth), the Penn State Open (tied for third) and the January NAC (eighth).
Franke consistently schedules top teams for the Owls to face, preparing them for the high level of competition they'll face as the season progresses. All four of the Owls' losses so far this season were to teams currently ranked in the Top 10, and they will face many of those same opponents and more at the Northwestern Duals on Jan. 31-Feb. 1. Just one month away is the Owls' Temple Invitational at home on Feb. 21, featuring six teams in total that are all currently ranked in the top 15 (Temple, Penn State, St. John's, Brown, Princeton and Penn).
