Women's Gymnastics Defeats Ursinus in Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's gymnastics defeated Ursinus in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at McGonigle Hall.  The Owls won the dual meet with a team score of 189.9, while the Bears were very closely behind with a team score of 189.575.

Temple's first event of the meet was vault, and the event was a huge success with a team score of 48.  All six gymnasts scored at least a 9.475.  Lauren Capone led the Owls with her score of 9.7, a season high for her.  Jasmine Johnson was right behind with a score of 9.675.  Mikaela Postlethwait earned a 9.575. Victoria Reggiani got a 9.55, and Briana Odom garnered a 9.5 on her first time on vault this season.  Stephanie Verry rounded out the event with her respective score of 9.475.

Up next for Temple were bars, where they earned a team score of 47.375.  Michaela Lapent had the best score of both teams with a 9.75.  Capone earned a season high 9.675.  Taylor Rakus led off the event with a season high 9.65.  Reggiani garnered a 9.5 with her routine.

Temple then moved onto the balance beam and got a team score of 47.55.  Alexis Arena finished the event for the Owls and earned an event high score of 9.725.  Lapent went second and also had the second best score with a 9.675.  Odom tied a season high of 9.6 on the event.  Capone also finished with a score of 9.5.

The Owls ended the meet on floor with a team score of 46.975.  Johnson continued her excellence on the event from last weekend and improved her season high with a 9.8.  Verry also set a season high with a 9.75.  Reggiani earned a 9.225.

Capone was the only all-around performer for both squads in the meet.  She finished with a combined score of 38.025 from all four events, just 0.05 less than her season high set at Eastern Michigan.

Temple's set season highs in team scores on vault and bars this meet.  The Owls had higher scores than the Bears on all events but floor.

Temple will go on the road next weekend to face New Hampshire on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
