Women's Soccer Travels to #20 UConn for Friday Matchup
10.1.15 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - As they continue American Athletic Conference play, Temple women's soccer heads to #20 UConn for a Friday night matchup with the reigning conference tournament champions. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
The Owls are currently 0-2-0 in conference play after being shut-out by UCF and #18 USF last week.Against the Knights, the Owls struggled on offense with only one shot on goal, courtesy of senior Erin Lafferty in the 63rd minute of the game. Against USF, senior Kelly Farrell and sophomore Gabriella McKeown gave the Owls the best chance of scoring.
Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Nash combined for 13 saves in the two games. Nash ranks second in the American Athletic Conference in saves (40), third in saves percentage (.851) and fourth in goals against average (.839).
Farrell is still ranked in the top-five statistically in total goals (11, t-3rd), total points (24, t-4th) and goals per game (1.00, t-3rd). With three more goals on the season, Farrell could break the program record for most in a single season (record is 13, set back in 1994 and 1995).
A win for the Owls would give them their first victory in conference play, the first win over UConn and the team's first win over a ranked opponent since joining the American Athletic Conference in 2013.
UConn enters the weekend 1-1-0 in conference play and unmoved in the NSCAA/Continental Tire National Poll. On September 24, the Huskies were shut-out by USF, 1-0 in a rematch of the American Athletic Conference tournament final. On September 27, UConn scored three second-half against UCF to become the first conference team to beat the Knights since they joined in 2013.
Junior Rachel Hill currently leads the conference in shots (55) and shots per game (5.00), while trailing Farrell in goals (8), goals per game (.727), points (19) and points per game (1.73). Hill is the current team leader for the Huskies in all of those categories as well.
Redshirt-junior Stephanie Ribeiro currently leads the conference and is tied for second in the country in game-winning goals (5).
Junior Emily Armstrong has registered 39 saves so far this season, ranking third in the conference. Armstrong is also one of two players on the Huskies' roster who is from the Philadelphia area; Armstrong hails from Collegeville, Pa. and senior Megan Hunsberger is from Bethlehem, Pa.
