Men's Soccer Earns First Conference Victory with 4-0 Shutout of Memphis

10.10.15 | Men's Soccer

Ambler, Pa. – Temple men's soccer earned its first American Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout over Memphis. Today's win is also the Owls' first defeat of the Tigers. The Owls now stand at 8-3-2 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

"It was big time for us," said head coach David MacWilliams. "I think this is going to help our confidence and it gets us back in the win column. We just have to build from this now."

Finding their groove back at the Ambler Sports Complex, the Owls put up their first goal in the 15th minute. Freshman Belal Mohamed drove the ball up field to find junior captain Matt Mahoney. Mahoney slid a cross from the right side to sophomore Joonas Jokinen who was able to boot his first goal of the season into the bottom right corner of the net.

Justin Stoddart logged the second goal for the Owls. In the 36th minute, Jared Martinelli served a ball into the box from the right side to find Hermann Doerner. Doerner was able to get a quick touch to Stoddart who flicked one in behind the Tigers' goalkeeper to put the Owls up 2-0 in the first half.

Both second half goals were scored within the 63rd minute. Jorge Gomez Sanchez caught a pass from Martinelli 25 yards out and took a left-footed shot that curled into the left side of the net to put the Owls up 3-0. Immediately following the restart, Gomez Sanchez passed to Doerner who took a one-touch and found Martinelli. Martinelli was able to log his first goal of the season into the bottom left corner and earn four total points in today's match.

Goalkeeper Alex Cagle logged two saves to keep the Tigers out of the net and earn his fifth shutout of the season.

"There were two conference games where we gave up three goals each game and we were unhappy about that," said MacWilliams. "We needed to get back to making it difficult for teams to play against us."

Temple returns to Ambler for a non-conference matchup against Columbia on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The game is set to kick off at 3:30 p.m.
