Women’s Soccer Survives Memphis, 2-1 in OT

10.18.15 | Women's Soccer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the third overtime game of the season, the Temple women's soccer team edged out Memphis, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Owls move to 10-6-1, 2-4-1 The American on the season. This is the first time in program history that the team has recorded back-to-back double-digit victories; the team finished 11-8-1 last season.

The game started out in favor of the Tigers, as Valerie Sanderson was able to take the ball in for a score after a defensive mixup in the sixth minute of the game.

In the 22nd minute, junior Elaine Byerley was able to capitalize on a defensive giveaway by Memphis, taking a long shot that landed in the net for her first goal of the season.

As regulation started, the Tigers looked to knock in goal number two, forcing goalkeeper Jordan Nash to make two saves off shots from Elizabeth Woerner.

After a foul on Memphis, senior Erin Lafferty crossed in a free kick that hit the back post, but was headed back across by senior Shannon Senour and tapped into the net by redshirt-junior Gina DiTaranto in the 97th minute of play. This is DiTaranto's second game-winning goal of the season, as she knocked in tiebreaker against Cincinnati back on October 8.

After a heartbreaking lost to Tulsa on Thursday, head coach Seamus O'Connor was happy with the way the team was able to rally together and get the win on the road.

"I'm really proud of the girls for getting a huge result on the road against Memphis. They're a very good team with a lot of special individual players and we were just able to stick to together as a team and defeated them by just playing well as a team," said O'Connor. "I think we got the win today based on the culture of our program. Everyone had each other's back and they competed as a team to earn the win."

The Owls will return home for their last two games of the regular season, starting with a Thursday afternoon matchup with SMU. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
