Field Hockey Hosts #12 Liberty in Play 4 The Cure Game on Sunday

10.3.15 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey will play on its home turf Sunday at 1 pm, facing #12 Liberty in the Owls' annual Play 4 The Cure game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support for breast cancer awareness, and donations will be taken at the entrance where t-shirts will also be sold. In addition, there will be a limited number of wristbands and ribbons for fans, and two tickets to Temple football's upcoming game against UCF will be raffled off.

The game will be Temple's only one of the week, after a trip to #15 Old Dominion was postponed due to inclement weather in Virginia. That game will be made up on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at noon.

The Owls (3-7) are looking to snap a three-game losing streak, with the most recent two of those losses coming by just a single goal (4-3 at #19 James Madison and 4-3 at American). Five of Temple's seven losses have come against teams ranked in the NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, and the Owls will face at least three more ranked teams, starting with #12 Liberty.

Senior Alyssa Delp leads Temple with nine goals this season, and scored a penalty stroke goal in each of the Owls' last two games. In Temple's most recent win at Monmouth (Sept. 18), Delp recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Owls to a 4-2 win. Delp leads the team with nine goals, which also ranks in a tie for second among all players in the conference. Her goals per game average of 0.90 ranks 14th among all players in NCAA Division I.

With 29 goals scored (2.90 goals per game), Temple ranks second only to #1 UConn among the teams in the BIG EAST Conference. The Owls rank third in total penalty corners (73) but lead the BIG EAST in goals scored off corners with 11 (1.10 per game).

Liberty has made a quick rise in the field hockey world after starting its program in 2011 under coach Jodi Murphy, now in her fifth season. The team has made two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and Murphy was named the 2014 4U Field Hockey/NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year.

The Flames are 6-3 overall but have lost three of their last four heading into Sunday's contest. All three of those losses were to ranked teams (#11 Louisville, #8 Wake Forest, #11 Boston College). Liberty's most recent win was also against a ranked team, as the Flames defeated #15 Old Dominion by a score of 2-1 on Sept. 25.

Senior Natalie Barr leads Liberty with nine goals, while sister Bethany Barr is the team's leader with four assists. Senior goalkeeper Mallory Cuccio has an impressive save percentage of .729 with 43 saves and only 16 goals allowed.

Temple and Liberty have faced each other just once before, a 3-0 win for the Owls at home on Oct. 28, 2011. That season was the first for Liberty as the Flames started their field hockey program that year.

Play 4 The Cure
Play4The Cure was founded in 2006 by Tina Reinprecht, coach of the Mystx Field Hockey Club in Feasterville, Pa., and a current board member of USA Field Hockey. Play4theCure began as an annual indoor field hockey tournament to raise money for the fight against breast cancer, but has since expanded to include many recreational sports programs, as well as middle school, high school and collegiate teams.

Now, together with National Foundation for Cancer Research, Play4theCure has the opportunity to save lives by emphasizing early detection and prevention, while playing a key role in finding cures for ALL types of cancer. Temple field hockey is proud each season to support the NFCR and Play4TheCure.
