Field Hockey Tops Lafayette, 4-1 for Third Straight Win
10.25.15 | Field Hockey
EASTON, Pa. - Senior Alyssa Delp scored twice while senior Tricia Light recorded a goal and two assists as Temple field hockey earned a 4-1 win at Lafayette on Sunday afternoon. It was the third straight win for the Owls and was nearly a shutout as they held Lafayette scoreless until the final second.
Temple (6-12) out-shot Lafayette 13-8, and led the game 3-0 at halftime. Lafayette's goal came as time expired, and was scored on only its second shot of the second half. For the Owls it was their final non-conference game of the season, and they have one regular season game remaining at BIG EAST foe Villanova on Saturday, Oct. 31 at noon.
"Overall I thought it was a very solid team performance for us today," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "Anytime you can get a win on the road against a team like Lafayette is a positive. I think the depth of our team continues to grow with every opportunity we have, and with those opportunities, our team's confidence continues to move in a positive direction.
Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell made a pair of saves for Temple, while freshman Chloe Johnson replaced her late in the game and made one save of her own before allowing the lone goal.
With just under six minutes elapsed in the first half, Light got Temple on the board with an assist from senior Sarah Deck on a corner play. Less than four minutes later, Light got the assist on Delp's first goal, scoring from the top of the circle.
Temple was awarded a penalty stroke with eight and a half minutes left in the opening period, and Delp took the shot and converted it to give the Owls a 3-0 lead which remained as the halftime score.
"I thought we did a great job following the game plan and coupling that with fundamental execution," said Freeman. "Passing, receiving, individual defense, we didn't do anything flashy today, we were just consistent and strong on all of our approaches to the ball."Â
Near the midway point of the second half, Light got her second assist on a goal by sophomore Rachael Mueller, who came in from the left and beat the Lafayette keeper one-on-one.
With Temple just seconds from the shutout, Lafayette's Amanda Magadan scored her ninth goal of the season as time was about to expire, having her shot from the top of the circle deflect off a Temple defender and into the cage.Â
