Women’s Soccer Sets Program Record with 2-1 Win over Houston

10.25.15 | Women's Soccer

AMBLER, Pa. – After honoring the team's nine seniors before the game and for the final time at Ambler Sports Complex, the Temple women's soccer team defeated the visiting Houston Cougars, 2-1. The Owls move to 12-6-1, 4-4-1 The American, setting a new program record for most wins in a season.

The Owls were the first to put points on the board in the 30th minute after senior Kelly Farrell was able to tap the ball over to junior Elaine Byerley, who sunk the ball into the net from outside of the box for her second goal of the season.

After the half, Houston tied things up in the 63rd minute when Gerogi Dolence was able to knock in the ball after a scramble around the net after a corner kick from the Cougars' Kristina Schulz.

20 minutes later, sophomore Gabriella McKeown collected a ball and drove up the right side of the field and was able to clear into the box, where Farrell slid to knock it in for the game-winning goal. It was Farrell's 12th goal, which leads the American Athletic Conference and ranks her third in Temple history for goals scored in a season.

With the seniors playing for their final time in a Temple uniform, head coach Seamus O'Connor is proud that the whole team go to experience a record-setting performance this season.

"This is a huge win. The team is young now but hopefully in ten years when they look back, they'll be proud of the fact that their names are in the record book," said O'Connor. "It's hard for us to understand that this started in August and we're on the verge of November. 12 wins with the schedule we have is really, really tough, especially with the games we play in our conference. So it's a huge accomplishment for the whole team."

The Owls will next head to the American Athletic Conference Tournament in Dallas, Texas, hosted by SMU. Seeding for the conference will be announced this week and the quarterfinals will start on November 3.
