More Than a Game: Men's Basketball Tours Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Temple head coach Fran Dunphy is one of the winningest coaches in college basketball history, but winning at the game of life is just as important to the Owls' coach.  Thursday, he and his team took a tour of the Naval Academy prior to the team's opener against #1 North Carolina.
"They probably will get more out of this experience in five or 10 years than they will today," said Dunphy on the life lessons learned by his players. "I think anytime you can get young people to stop thinking about themselves, and to start thinking about others (is a good thing). Anytime you can do that, that is what you want them to do."
The three visiting teams, Temple, North Carolina and Florida, started the day with a greeting from the Naval Academy's Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuck and then a lecture from three marines on leadership.
"One of the main things I got out of it was courage," said team captain Jaylen Bond. "To have courage day in and day out. To lead my team in the right direction."
The teams then toured the base with stops at Ricketts Hall, to view how midshipmen live. They saw firsthand a MH-60 S helicopter as well as a military humvee. They then toured a ship in the harbor and did a simulation exercise before joining the 4000-plus midshipmen for noon formation and lunch.Â
"It was a great experience, to see things they go through daily," said Bond. "They have a tough schedule, similar to ours, from morning until night. They do not have much free time and neither do we. Â The only difference is that they are working to defend our country."Â
It is back to work for Temple Friday as the Owls tip-off against the Tar Heels at 7:00 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
