Blanca Fernandez Wins NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships
11.13.15 | Women's Cross Country
PRINCETON, N.J. - When Blanca Fernandez toes the line at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 21, she will do so having been unbeaten by any other runner during the 2015 season. Fernandez took first place for a sixth time this year on Friday, winning the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships in a time of 20:52.
"Blanca's race was just fantastic," said coach James Snyder. "It's been a progression throughout the entire year. She made the turn with 300 meters to go behind two other runners, and pulled away over the last 200 meters. It was a really windy day and a packed race up front throughout, but as runners dropped she moved up and she put herself in great position to win a regional championship, which is the first for this program. It's a really, really special day and I hope the rest of the team can gather some momentum off Blanca's performances moving forward."Â
Fernandez, already the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Champion this season, now adds an NCAA Regional title to her impressive list of achievements. She will look to earn her third NCAA All-America honor when she competes in Louisville, Ky., next weekend.
As a team, Temple placed 23rd of 30 teams, with the Owls' four other point-scorers finishing within just over a minute of each other.Â
