News & Notes Following Temple's 44-23 loss at USF
At 8-2 Temple is off to its best start since 2010 when it was 8-2 before finishing 8-4.
Temple has a chance to reach 9 wins for just the 5th time in program history and with two wins, can reach the 10-win plateau which would tie the 1979 team for most in a season.
The Temple offense scored a first quarter TD on an 8-play, 92-yard drive. It was the fifth 90+-yard TD drive of the season for the Owls and the third straight game that they did so.
The defense surrendered three rushing plays of 40+ yards against USF after allowing just three such plays in the season's first nine games.
In a nine play span in under 9:00 of play, the USF offense accounted for 253 yards and 28 points. In the games other 51 minutes, the accumulated 303 yards, and 16 points on 61 plays.
Junior RB Jahad Thomas opened the scoring with his 17th touchdown of the season. It was his 15th rushing touchdown this year and he has at last one rushing TD in all 10 games. In addition, he became just the tenth Owl to reach 1000-yard rushing in a single-season. His 1,035 rushing yards this year ranks 11th all-time.
Junior QB P.J. Walker reached the 2,000 yard passing mark for the third straight year and joins Henry Burris as the only players in Temple History to claim that feat. Walker is closing in on Burris' all-time marks in several categories – he moved into 2nd on the all-time completion list last night ahead of Mike McGann - and is just one touchdown pass away from tying Burris with 49 all-time.
Senior LB Tyler Matakevich continues leading the nation with 451 career tackles. Once again he led the Owls in tackles and is the only FBS player to lead his team in every game this season. With 96 tackles this season, he is just four tackles shy of reaching 100 for the fourth straight year – a feat accomplished by just six other players in college football history.
